The time has come. Hardywood’s Bourbon Aged Belgian Double IPA will be released this Saturday! I was lucky enough to snag a bottle last night after we closed, and it is amazing! If you’re in the Richmond area, I highly recommend getting one (or three) of these. I know I’ll definitely be picking up more.
Hardywood’s 2012 Hop Harvest was a success! We harvested over 50 lbs of Virginia grown hops for this year’s RVA IPA!
Hophead for life.
Happy IPA Day!! Hardywood’s Belgian Double IPA run through a Randall with whole leaf Summit, Citra, Simcoe, and Sorachi Ace hops. Also have the Hoplar IPA aged in bourbon barrels on draft. Anyone else drinking some awesome IPAs today?
This weekend was highlighted by an epic adventure in IPA greatness. There’s no question the IPA has quickly vaulted to my favorite type of beer and these are two heavy weight giants in the craft IPA landscape. The Menu: Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA & Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA (aged 1 year).
We led off with Stone bc we know first hand of the 120’s palate obliterating affects. Even though the Ruination is so named for its own taste bud killing features, it cannot stand up to the behemoth ~18%abv from 120. This tenth anniversary bottle did not disappoint. It was bold, dark and had that distinct Stone/Ruination flavor. I was surprised at the lack of bitterness we found in this one when comparing to a tradition Ruination.
So for the 120 min we set up a little vertical tasting with the 120 aged 1 year compared to a fresh, 2012 bottle. Holy shit, the 1 yr was phenomenal! Most of the liquor/alcohol taste had matured away and we were left with a smooth malty, caramel taste. That classic 60/90 taste was there but much richer; very complex. The biggest surprise was how much darker the aged beer was compared to the fresh bottle. It was almost an opaque amber. I highly recommend aging 120 min at least 5 months before cracking one open.
The end result was pure drunkenness. No other beer came close to these two for the entire weekend. Next year we’re set up for a 3 year vertical tasting (2 year, 1 year, fresh). Can’t wait. Craft on.
Steamed I missed this one, but sounds like a great time boys!
So I got to help Hardywood Park with a new beer that they’re brewing: Virginia Strawberry. This is a Witbier recipe that doesn’t use any coriander, orange peels, or any other spices so the strawberry flavor won’t be hidden. Processing 2,500lbs of strawberries is no easy task. Check out a sneak peak of VA Strawberry over at All Malt America.

Well this beer is one of my new favorites…

TBA is a collaboration between Stone, Fat Head’s, and Bear Republic. I had this a few weeks ago for the first time and it was simply awesome. An extra hoppy Texas Brown Ale? Sign me up. Anywho I picked up as many of these as I could a few days ago so this will be what I’m enjoying for the next couple of days. Definitely try this out if you have a chance people.
Also, I realized my most recent Amazon purchase sums me up pretty well…

Finally got to visit the Dogfish Head Alehouse this weekend up in Falls Church, VA. Great place, great food, and of course great beer. Oh, and I got to see Radiohead too. Absolutely mind-blowing show!
Gov. McDonnell just signed legislation that will help craft breweries, just like RVA’s own Hardywood.
I wrote a piece on this as well at All Malt America! Can’t wait for the future future holds for craft breweries in Virginia!

The past few weeks of my life have been super busy. Between getting a promotion at work, beer/music festivals, helping out at Hardywood as much as I can, and moving into a new apartment, I haven’t had much time to relax. With my next 2 weekends being booked with JMU’s Graduation and an M83 concert, I can say I’m really looking forward to one weekend where I can just relax.
Anywho, if you’re in the Richmond, VA area you need to get your hands on some of Hardywood’s Bourbon Cru. It was brewed like an abbey quadrupel and aged in half-decade old bourbon barrels from A. Smith Bowman Distillery from Fredericksburg. Since I was working when I had the opportunity to try this beer for the first time, I didn’t want to drink too much of it since it comes in at 10.2% ABV. But from the little bit that I did have, I can tell you this is something phenomenal. I was able to get 4 bottles total this past weekend, so I’ll hopefully have some free time in the next week or so to get my wrap my mind around it. I’ll definitely be aging the others to enjoy sometime this coming winter.

Hardywood has done extraordinary things since they opened about 7 months ago. One of their beers, the Gingerbread Stout, received a perfect 100 from BeerAdvocate Magazine. I am really looking forward to what they do in the future as they continue to expand!

I love Arrested Development but I have no love for its crazy fans who quote everything even the lines that are not that funny...
It all makes so much sense now!
I get to my local spot only to show up 5 min too late for these… #fail #craftbeer
I am that type of douchebag friend who doesn’t talk with you for weeks but still cares about you and hopes you still care too.
